Coal Drops Yard

Location: Kings Cross, London
Architect: Heatherwick Studio
2018

Coal Drops Yard is a central part of the wider redevelopment of Kings Cross in central London, with architects Heatherwick Studio responsible for the restoration of a pair of Victorian warehouses with attached train viaducts.

Originally built in 1850, the two-storey brick and cast iron structures were used to receive and store coal from the North. By the 1990s the warehouses housed various industrial storage facilities as well as underground nightclubs and bars. However, by the late 90’s the area fell into disrepair and required restoration.

Heatherwick’s restoration works have been completed with sensitivity towards the original Victorian design, with features such as the

cobbled yard helping to preserve it's character.

The two structures stretch out towards each other, meeting in the middle to form a central focus and a new upper storey, which allows for a new elevated viewpoint over London.

The revamped warehouses and surrounding area now serve as a mixture of retail, event and public spaces and is known for hosting emerging brands and studio showrooms as well as students from the nearby Central Saint Martins Art School.
